We need to talk about this.

Not really, he answers.

Very well, then.

I toss and turn in bed all night. Bonding? Unbelievable. My damn magic mistook the sexual tension for something more. Soulmates? Ha! This is absurd. I don’t believe in soulmates. I think love is a chemical reaction in our bodies, made to help us reproduce and live together. It’s just hormones, really. That’s why we witches can fake it with love potions.

I struggle with my comforter and stare at the ceiling of my bedroom in the dark. I can make out the outline of a spider web. I often let them live with me rent-free for a while. They’re not bothering me, and they eat mosquitoes in the summer months. So very witchy of me.

“What do you think about this whole ordeal?” I ask the spider.

Of course, she has no answer for me. I’ve known witches who could control insects, but I’m not one of them. I roll on my back and bury my face in my pillow.

Luke can’t be wrong. I felt it—the fusion of our magic—when my flames engulfed MacRath. It felt good, like the first sip of coffee in the morning or the smell of freshly baked bread.

Oh, wait, that’s real. I can smell bread. I groan and look at my phone. It’s past four in the morning. Nellie is already working. I haven’t managed an hour of sleep.

Well, here goes nothing.

I get out of bed, throw a bathrobe over my shoulders, put my bunny slippers on, and go downstairs.

I find Nellie in front of the ovens, as expected.

“You’re up early,” she says to me with a bright smile. She has flour on the tip of her nose, as always. Her blonde hair is tied into a messy bun over her head.

“I couldn’t sleep,” I mumble. “Want coffee?”

“Yes, please.”

I make my way to the front of the shop. I turn one of the lights on, just enough to see what I’m doing. Nellie decorated the place with pumpkin-shaped loaves of bread and Halloween cookies. A few witches on broomsticks hang from the ceiling.

I make two cups of coffee with oat milk. One sugar for Nellie, two for me. I steal one of the ghost-shaped cookies for sale. Nellie joins me as I dip its head in my coffee.

“So, what’s on your mind?” she asks as she sits in front of me.

“Nothing,” I lie.

She gives me a look. Of course, she knows I’m lying. We’re twins.

I sigh. “Just something Luke told me last night…”

“Oh, about you and MacRath bonding?” she says.

I gape. “The little weasel told you.”

Nellie laughs. “Of course he told me. As soon as he found it himself. Yesterday, he practically ran here to find you. But you were gone, so he texted you and told me everything.”

“Fair enough.”

“It bothers you?” she asks. “He’s quite handsome.”

“That’s not the problem!” I say, outraged. “He’s a wolf!”

“So? I didn’t take you for prejudiced.”

I stare. I had sex once with a werewolf I met in a bar. Witches and
